Chicago is well known as home to many blues greats, and, as a result, plenty of decent blues bars feature respectable music and good bands catering to tourists. But musicians who play at these tourist clubs, they go to Rosa's when they really want to hear the good stuff. A nondescript tavern room located four-five miles from Old Town and Lincoln Park, Rosa's offers the unbeatable combination of great music and cheap drinks. Although the crowd here is friendly, any musician who gets up to play at Rosa's knows that he or she better bring some serious chops to the table, because bad music simply isn't tolerated here. Coming to Rosa's is sure to soothe your soul.

This posh lounge is a great place for those who actually like to hear themselves talk while enjoying their favorite drink. The setting is intimate with low lighting and dark decor. With about 50 seats throughout the place there is a fair amount of seating, but it can get busy when the late-night crowd rolls in around 2:00. Bartenders are friendly and approachable and service is pretty quick if the time is right.
Chicago-style pizza is the specialty at this family-owned restaurant, which has been perfecting its recipes of classic Italian dishes for over 50 years. It's not surprising then that the owners welcome families with small children to dine at the large mahogany tables that surround the bar. The menu features everything from Penne con Pollo Basilico to full slabs of B.B.Q. Baby Back Ribs, and everything comes in generous portions. Call ahead if you'd like to come on the weekends, tables fill up fast. Prices at the bar are reasonable and the service is quick. There is also live entertainment throughout the week. A recent New York Times article that discussed Chicago theater companies rightly highlighted this growing off-Loop (the Chicago equivalent of off-Broadway) company. Now finishing its fourth season, The House Theatre of Chicago has built a citywide reputation as a fearless fringe company with a self-aware style yet readily accessible. Much of the House Theatre mission is to involve the collaboration of the artistic process. As such House shows include singing, elaborate (yet tasteful) special effects, and many other elements that play to the best parts of the spectacle of theatre. If you plan on checking out something outside the world famous theatres (i.e. Steppenwolf and Goodman), the House Theatre is rapidly becoming a staple of the brilliant Chicago theatre scene. The theater opens at 8pm from Thursday to Saturday and at 7pm on Sundays.
The Hungry Brain and thoughts of a dive bar should be synonymous, except with more artsy customers. Along with this place being a dive bar comes both the good and the bad aspects of such establishments. The confined space of The Hungry Brain makes the bar fill with smoke easily. When jazz bands play on Sunday nights talking becomes near impossible. But the local feel, the friendly service, and the great atmosphere all contribute to making this one of the most intimate and most welcoming bars in Chicago. Despite being out of the way of most touristy areas, Hungry Brain is a great place to drink and socialize.
The brick-walled and contemporary interiors of this bar may be nothing special, but the nights here are live and kicking. What sets this bar apart is the fact that it has been a concert venue for thousands of acts, such as John Hammond and Los Lobos, covering varied genres of music. Fresh talent can also contact the bar and arrange a performance. Diners can enjoy the music as they dig into the tasty spread of appetizers like Jerk Chicken Empanadas or Warm Goat Cheese Salad. Choose from the sandwiches, pizzas and hamburgers while you chug down your drinks. Martyrs' is known to serve a fabulous brunch on Sundays. Inexpensive and fun, this joint is a neighborhood favorite.
