The Indian Boundary Prairie is composed of a group of four separate prairies - Dropseed, Gensburg, Paintbrush and Sundrop - that together form what is Illinois' largest surviving expanse of grassland. Breathtaking vistas and new discoveries await around every corner. The prairies are home to a diverse and varied plethora of plants and wildlife, including a multitude of butterflies, birds and wild flowers. The landscape is forever changing, with new and wondrous sights to behold throughout the year. The preserve is managed by the Nature Conservancy and Northeastern Illinois University, in conjunction with the Friends of the Indian Boundary Prairies. Apart from serving as a safe haven for a variety of rare and endangered species, the prairies also form the perfect backdrop for a host of awareness and educational programs that highlight the importance of conserving our natural heritage. Visitors are welcome to explore the preserve on their own, and a number of pathways have been laid down to help guide the way. As you make your way through the preserve, keep an eye out for rare plant, butterfly and bird species including the eastern prairie white fringed orchid, the Aphrodite fritillary and great yellow legs. The preserve is open daily from dawn to dusk. Located just off Route 57, all four prairies lie within Markham's city limits.
In the Chicago Ridge Park District, the Frontier Park Fieldhouse is a huge fitness and sports center. A playground for children, volleyball and basketball courts, and a walking track are the facilities provided in the arena which host local matches. William W. Powers State Recreation Area is a lovely expanse of lakeside greenery inviting local families and visitors to enjoy the natural sights of Chicago. The park is centered around Wolf Lake, a 419 acre expanse of water that offers six miles of fishing along its sandy banks. The site housed a Nike Ajax missile at the height of the Cold War crisis, with a defunct model of the same missile present on the site today. A diverse assortment of wildlife in the park ranges from Monk Parakeets to deer and coyotes.
With as many as five baseball and softball fields, with professional lighting and other amenities, Hammond Optimist Youth Sports Complex offers one of the city's best sports facilities.
