»Thai House Restaurant

It's a mystery how the Thai House Restaurant stays in business, given that it is always far from bursting with customers, but it does provide good food at reasonable prices in the pedestrian-friendly University area. So if you don't fancy making the trek up to the Southeast Heights where most of the competition is located, or if you want to take away rather than to linger over a romantic meal, this is a decent option. Thai House also sells cards, incense, soap, tea cups, jewelry, hair accessories, and handicrafts. - Pip Lustgarten

The shop has acquired hundreds of collectors' books and some valuable antiques.

»Masks Y Mas

The Mexican Day of the Dead, celebrated on November 1st and 2nd, is a celebration in which the living honor the departed. Skulls are its characteristic imagery, most commonly in the form of folk art figurines such as the Novia (Bride), or made of sugar and brightly decorated. Masks Y Mas store and gallery is a truly one of a kind entity in the United States, importing Day of the Dead artwork, masks and figurines, and displaying them beside all sorts of locally-themed kitsch, including t-shirts and jewelery. It successfully combines cultural education, humor and a serious social commitment; the latter evident in the frequent exhibitions of work by incarcerated artists. - Pip Lustgarten

Fay Abrams founded her first crafts gallery in Old Town in 1974 as a showcase for local artists with a flair for taking ideas and materials far beyond the confines of standard application.
