It's the hottest summer in human history and, in just a few short months, all water on earth will evaporate -- and humankind with it. In response, twenty-something Charlie has taken to her couch with her beloved possessions: peanut butter, Wolf Blitzer and Herschel, her pet fish. Her mother, roommate and sometimes-boyfriend all attempt to persuade her to leave the apartment and enjoy life. But as Charlie's memories take over, more complicated reasons for her self-inflicted hibernation emerge, as she confronts her deferred dreams and considers the possibility of life and love just outside her door. Filled with playwright Nick Blaemire's ("Glory Days") trademark quirky, witty style, "Soon"'s youthful humor delivers a searing and sardonic commentary on what to do with the time you have left.

Biohazard is a hardcore punk and heavy metal act from Brooklyn, New York that drew some misguided controversy at the time of its debut in 1987 due to lyrics that reflected fascist and white supremacist views, despite two of the band members being Jewish. The controversy, although short-lived, did much to catapult the band to the forefront of Brooklyn's burgeoning hardcore scene of the late-1980s through the 1990s. The band would have an on and off again relationship with major recording labels throughout its career. This, and other minor setbacks, however, did little to keep Biohazard from becoming one of the biggest commercial successes on the hardcore punk scene.

»The Island

April 02, 2015 8:00 PM

Athol Fugard's Tony-nominated drama "The Island" depicts the psychological and physical condition of black political prisoners in South Africa at the height of apartheid. The moving production follows two men who are confined to a location based on the notorious Robben Island prison. There, they spend their days doing back-breaking labor, and their nights rehearsing Sophocles' "Antigone" to present to their fellow inmates. When one man learns his sentence is being reduced, their friendship is tested. Considered to be one of the most significant plays of the twentieth century, "The Island" is based on the true story of Norman Ntshinga, a black actor in South Africa who was arrested on suspicion of being a member of the then-banned African National Congress and sentenced to 10 years. The play, staged at Alexandria's MetroStage, is as powerful and relevant today as it was when devised with two actors in 1973. Doug Brown returns to reprise his role of Winston, while Michael Anthony Williams plays fellow prisoner, John.
