A department of the City of Ames, the Ames Public Library features a nice selection of books, videos, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs, and magazines. Programs are regularly scheduled.
Located to the south of Iowa State University's campus, Reiman Gardens was established with the aim of getting students acquainted with the science of horticulture. Spread across 17 acres (6.87 hectares), the gardens were established in 1995, thanks to the efforts of alumnus Roy Reiman and the college's horticulture department. Housed within Reiman Gardens is a conservatory, herb garden, Christina Reiman Butterfly Wing, rose garden, Patty Jischke Children’s Garden and many more. Visitors can enjoy a walk by the lake or follow any one of the green trails.
McFarland Park is a 200-acre area that includes a variety of ecotypes, the Story County Conservation Center, Stargazing Observatory, hard-surfaced Touch-a-Life Trail, a six and a half-acre lake stocked with bluegill, bass and catfish, five and a half miles of trails, and picnic areas with grills.
Prairie Moon Winery and Vineyards' varieties are Cabernet Franc, Chancellor, Chelios, Frontenac, Marchael Foch, Niagara, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Seyval Blanc, St. Pepin, Swenson Red, Traminette, and Vidal Blanc.
Original family furniture, a museum and a library can be found at the restored birthplace of former First Lady Mamie Doud Eisenhower, wife of Dwight D. Eisenhower, the 34th President of the United States.
