»Bobby Lee

April 25, 2015 10:00 PM

Best known from his nine years spent being politically incorrect and riffing on Asian stereotypes on the Fox staple "MADtv", Bobby Lee has emerged as a comedy superstar thanks to a relentless stand-up touring schedule, regular appearances on E!'s "Chelsea Lately", a role on the NBC sitcom "Animal Practice" and a movie lineup that includes films like "The Dictator" and "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle". This San Diego native got his big break by working at the La Jolla Comedy Store and appearing at Los Angeles' famed Comedy Store, parlaying his experiences there into a showcase for his physical brand of humor, which takes on everything from smoking weed to the Korean-American experience.

»Bodeans

April 25, 2015 7:30 PM

Hailing from Waukesha, Wisconsin, The BoDeans is an alternative rock band that was formed in 1983 by co-vocalists Kurt Neumann and Sam Llanas. With Neumann on electric guitar and Llanas on acoustic guitar, the musicians found drummer Guy Hoffman and bassist Bob Griffin before signing to Slash/Warner Records as the BoDeans. The band began recording at the Sunset Sound Factory in Hollywood and released its debut album Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams in 1986. Despite the album receiving critical acclaim, Hoffman left the band later that year and the BoDeans have since been unable to keep a drummer for longer than a few years. The remainder of the 1980s brought continued success to the band, who supported U2 on The Joshua Tree Tour and whose sophomore album, Outside Looking In, released in 1987, was produced by Talking Heads member Jerry Harrison. After a brief hiatus in the late-1990s, The BoDeans returned in 2004 with its anticipated seventh album, Resolution. After failing to show up to a concert in 2011, Llanas left The BoDeans, citing years of creative differences. With Neumann as its only original member, The BoDeans continues to play and release new music.

»The Island

April 25, 2015 3:00 PM

Athol Fugard's Tony-nominated drama "The Island" depicts the psychological and physical condition of black political prisoners in South Africa at the height of apartheid. The moving production follows two men who are confined to a location based on the notorious Robben Island prison. There, they spend their days doing back-breaking labor, and their nights rehearsing Sophocles' "Antigone" to present to their fellow inmates. When one man learns his sentence is being reduced, their friendship is tested. Considered to be one of the most significant plays of the 20th century, "The Island" is based on the true story of Norman Ntshinga, a black actor in South Africa who was arrested on suspicion of being a member of the then-banned African National Congress and sentenced to 10 years. The play, staged at Alexandria's MetroStage, is as powerful and relevant today as it was when devised with two actors in 1973. Doug Brown returns to reprise his role of Winston, while Michael Anthony Williams plays fellow prisoner John.
