MetroStage offers the gift of comedy and music for the holidays with their annual production of "A Broadway Christmas Carol". A twist on the Dickens classic, this show incorporates hysterical song parodies of 33 Broadway show tunes by Rodgers and Hammerstein, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stephen Sondheim and more into the production for an enjoyable musical mash-up. This Washington, D.C. tradition, created by Kathy Feininger, provides the perfect occasion to celebrate the holiday season with friends and family.

»A Capital Christmas

December 21, 2014 7:00 PM

Coming up on its 50th anniversary, the 170-voice Choral Arts Chorus is known for its festive seasonal celebrations, including the annual sing-along to Christmas favorites, "A Capital Christmas". This year's embassy partner for the event is Argentina, so you can expect some yuletide tango and Latin-themed songs in the mix. Additionally, the event features some epic guitar mastery courtesy of famed rocker Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan, who will be present at the first performance. Guitar hero Michael Bard shares the shred for the latter two shows.

»National Symphony Orchestra - Handels Messiah

December 21, 2014 1:00 PM

Amid the hustle and bustle of the season, take an evening to slow it down a bit and emerge newly inspired. The National Symphony Orchestra's annual concert featuring Handel's soaring work of faith has become a much-loved holiday tradition in Washington. The 1741 masterpiece includes some of the most joyful and memorable music ever written and is the most performed choral work in the English language. With its powerful "Hallelujah" chorus, "Messiah" celebrates a timeless message of hope and renewal that resonates each Yuletide season. This year, Nicholas McGegan (named "one of the finest baroque conductors of his generation" by the London "Independent") conducts four gifted singers and The Washington Chorus in this NSO tradition.

»Joseph and the Technicolor Amazing Technicolor

December 21, 2014 1:30 PM

Based on a story of Joseph found in the Bible's Book of Genesis, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a musical theater production and the first Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice collaboration to be staged for a public audience in 1968. The family-friendly, sung-through show has become a world-wide hit, having been performed on all levels of theater from schools to community theaters since its debut in the West End in 1973 and on Broadway in 1982. The show follows the Biblical story of Joseph, a prophet whose brightly colored coat was given to him to show his father's favor. Driven by jealously, his brothers sell him as a slave and falsely proclaim his death. Though he endures several hardships, Joseph eventually makes his way back home with the help of a spirit he sees in his dreams.
