    »Bootsy Collins

    September 18, 2014 7:00 PM

Initially gaining prominence in the 1960s as the bassist of James Brown's backing band, Bootsy Collins eventually clashed with Brown, as many of his other band members were known to do, and moved back to his native Cincinnati, Ohio to form the funk band House Guests with his brother. This led to a move to Detroit and an introduction to George Clinton, who asked both Bootsy and his brother to join his funk collective Parliament-Funkadelic, which eventually amicably split to form a separate touring group on P-Funk's label, Bootsy's Rubber Band. He went on to record several solo albums to much acclaim, as well as work with prominent musicians like Talking Heads and Fatboy Slim. In 1997, Bootsy Collins, along with the 15 other members of P-Funk, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but this didn't push the renowned bassist into retirement; Bootsy Collins still tours and releases new music today.

    »Gary Puckett and Union Gap

    September 18, 2014 7:30 PM

Somewhat of a straight-laced, no frills alternative to the druggy psychedelic era of the late 1960s, Gary Puckett served up numerous AM radio singles that were big hits with fans of unabashed sunshine pop. Whether performing solo or with his band, the Union Gap, Puckett has retained the crooning sort of showmanship that guys like Neil Diamond made legendary careers off of. Light, somewhat schmaltzy rock is fleshed-out with horn lines, canned string sections and of course, lyrics full of tales of unrequited love and infatuation. Puckett's classic 1968 ballad, "Young Girl," was a huge hit in the US and reached #1 on the UK singles chart. Now over 40 years into his career, he continues to tour frequently.

    »Yentl

    September 18, 2014 7:30 PM

A hit on Broadway when it debuted in 1975, the revered drama "Yentl" gets a thrilling new adaptation with a rousing rock-pop score by Jill Sobule, singer-songwriter of the original 1995 hit "I Kissed a Girl." Forbidden from studying the Talmud because of her gender, Yentl disguises herself as a man and sets out for a yeshiva. But when she falls in love, she must decide how far she's willing to go to protect her identity. Based on Isaac Bashevis Singer's classic Yiddish short story, "Yentl the Yeshiva Boy", this powerful tale set in 19th-century Eastern Europe has inspired legions of artists, including Barbra Streisand, who transformed it into a powerful musical film in 1983.
