Originally carved out of a naturally wooded area, the Pacific Raceway creates challenging corners and turns rather than a traditional oval shape. Major races and drag races often take place on the track. This venue is a haven for motor racing fanatics, especially for spectators. Call ahead for more details.
Some people view Federal Way as a place to fill the tank while driving between Seattle and Tacoma. Such people make the mistake of overlooking the city's many treasures, not least of which is this wonderful 27-acre park, which includes the Five Mile Lake itself, popular with both swimmers and fishermen. Ample tennis and baseball facilities plus dozens of barbecue areas surround the water. A trail system winds through the park's dense woods. It opens daily from 8a.
Strap on some skates and hop on the ice! Whether you're a beginner or an expert, you're bound to have a fun time on the ice rink. Visit during a Friday or Saturday night and skate while listening to a live DJ. The ice rink is rather chilly, so make sure you dress in layers so that you won't be cold while sipping hot chocolate and while taking a break or too hot when you're on the rink trying to master skating backwards. If you're not in the mood for this winter sport then buy 20 pitches and work on your swing at their bating cage or pay for a round of golf on their miniature golf course. Kent Valley Ice Centre prides itself on being one of the best family activities in Washington!
This Kent trail, best accessed by way of Gary Grant Park, is perfect for a leisurely bike, inline skate or horse ride. The paved, level path has separate tracks for the two kinds of traffic. Traffic is light enough that there is rarely a crowd. Soos Creek has very lush, green banks, mostly unsullied by pollutants. If business brings you to Kent, bring yourself here to unwind. One of the Northwest's premiere golf courses, this beautiful 18 hole golf course offers a challenging, yet fun experience for golfers of all skills. A driving range, pro shop, and restaurant are on site.
Elk Run Golf Club opened in 1989 and has expanded to 18 holes. General improvements make this a top public course. The front nine challenges even low-handicap golfers with sand, water and narrow fairways. The back nine eases up a little. The club welcomes tournaments and offers new restaurant and banquet facilities.
This 14-mile trail is a continuation of the Green River Trail. Though it doesn't have the greenery of some other local trails, you will get to see a good representative portion of South Seattle along this one. It may not be the most beautiful ride in the world, but it is an excellent example of an urban trail and a perfect way to see the local sights. A trail map is available on the Web site.
Designed by Dale Chihuly and Arthur Anderson, the Bridge of Glass is an overpass for pedestrians above Interstate 705. The bridge actually connects the Washington State History Museum with the Museum of Glass . The 500 feet long horizontal structure has a pair of crystal towers right in the center, which marks the halfway point of the bridge. Originally designed for showing the beauty of glass in its various forms, the functional value is also obvious; it acts as a connector between the two Washington landmarks.
This public championship 18 hole golf course is rated number seven in the state of Washington and offers challenging fun for both novice and expert golfers.
Just south of Seattle sits this relatively short golf course about 5071 yards. Its string of modest par-four holes won't frustrate even the most inexperienced golfer. Two trickier holes and a sturdy bridge cross the Duwamish Slough on the back nine. The nearby freeway and airport make the course a little noisy. Please call the golf club for more information.
Metro Parks operates two indoor pools year-round and one outdoor pool.
