The village level commune of Meursault in the Côte-d'Or department of Burgundy is built on a pre-historic settlement dating back to the Roman era. The evidence of the pre-historic settlement can be obtained from the ruins of the Gallo-Roman fort on a hill, which was used to protect the settlement. Other historic architectural splendors include the well-preserved 11th-century Château de Meursault and the surrounding vineyard, the Hospital of Meursault from the 12th Century and a 15th Century Church dedicated to Saint Nicloas at the center. This village covers a major viticulture area of Burgundy wine region that mainly produces white wine derived from Chardonnay grapes and is awarded with the French certification of Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (A.O.C.).
