Kansas City's very own community center, Hillcrest Community Center stays true to its name. Many programs and camps for almost everyone are organized here. Health camps, summer camps, sports activities and art classes for the youth as well as adults are held here every now and then. In this sense the center truly serves for the betterment of the community. Within the center there are three meeting rooms and a gymnasium that are rented out for events and meetings.
A true paradise for golf-enthusiasts, the Nicklaus Golf Club at Lionsgate is another gem of a course from the Nicklaus Design kitty. Located to the south of the center of Overland Park, the golf course is sprawled out between West 143rd Street and West 135th Street, and is a 18-hole championship course that has hosted some very prominent golf tournaments, like the Midwest Classic. As a private club, one would have to be a member to enjoy all of the excellent facilities on offer here, but non-members can also enjoy some of the facilities, albeit at a higher cost. This theater, known as one of the finest outdoor theaters in the country, hosts an entire season of shows. Celebrating its 52nd anniversary season, this magnificent theater boasts a newly constructed 10-story, fully enclosed community stage, as well as "Garden of the Stars" and "Starlight Square." This 30 acre estate depicts what life was like during the mid-19th Century. It is located in the magnificent Fleming Park and is open year-round. Some of the highlights here are the original buildings that date back to that era and within their halls, the actors who reenact the daily life of these hearty settlers on the American frontier. Missouri Town 1855 also offers hands-on learning with several different workshops that vary from teaching visitors how to blacksmith, basket weave or even how to hearth cook. As a side excursion, Fleming Park itself has much to offer like Lake Jacomo and Blue Springs Lake, both perfect for those who seek the Great Outdoors.
