Gothenburg does not have any exciting adventure pools for children, and the one in Lerum caters mostly to the youngest children. But if you continue inland you come to Stadsparksbadet in Boras. Apart from swimming pools you will find water slides, whirlpools, wave machines, a climbing wall and a jumping tower. There are also saunas to relax in, and tanning beds. Stadsparksbadet has been judged the most adventurous swimming pool on the west coast by the newspaper Goteborgs Posten. If you are driving here, take Riksvag 40 to Boras.
One of the largest parks in the city Ramnaparken, with its rolling hilly terrain, is known to have a rich variety of fauna within its perimeters. Within the premises of the park is a museum which was built in 1914. The museum has, since its opening, gathered quite a number of exhibits and has become very acclaimed. On a hilly park of the park is a golf course. Lake Ramnasjön with its bird colony also falls within the premises of the park.
The small industrial town of Borås, just a short drive from Gothenburg, is mainly known for its textile mills. It is also home to the largest zoo in western Sweden, with over 500 animals and 80 different species. Almenäs Badplats is a gorgeous lake beckoning tourists and locals since the early 19th Century. The lake is elongated and it is lined with picturesque woods on all sides. Its water is safe, clean and perfect for a swim during summers and is also of high ecological quality. The adjoining area of the lake is converted into a biking trail and is also perfect for a peaceful walk. The lawns that border the clear waters of the lake make ideal places for sunbathing. The Almenäs Badplats is also perfect for a picnic with family as it has many spots where you can enjoy BBQ parties with your loved ones.
Downhill skiing is not something that you would associate with western Sweden, but there are some ski slopes here. The largest, without being large in any sense, is Ulricehamn Ski Center. The area is situated about a one-hour drive east of Gothenburg and offers skiing both in the daytime and in the evenings. A ski pass for one day does not cost much; besides there are discounts for children. Do note that the area is mostly suitable for children and beginners. Experienced skiers will have to travel over 500km north to find more advanced slopes. To get here by car, take road 40 towards Ulicehamn, then follow the signs.
Alingsås Ryttarsällskap is a horseback riding school located in Alingsås. You can learn how to simply ride, or do more complicated maneuvers like jumps and dressage.
Vattenpalatset i Lerum is a safe and fun outing for both children and adults, with a water slide, jacuzzi, cave, and small beach. Grown-ups can enjoy swimming outdoors (in heated pools) even during the winter. There is also a café that sells a variety of snacks to keep the hunger pains at bay after an enthusiastic day of swimming. You can get there by the local train to Lerum station.
