The city of Boston is one of America's oldest cities, instrumental in the Revolutionary War and the early day's of the young nations governance and royal subterfuge. In addition Boston's early American history including the iconic Boston Tea Party, Boston Massacre and Battle of Bunker Hill, the area's topography is equally fascinating. What we think of today as Boston was cobbled together from land reclaimed by extensive damming. Originally the Shawmut Peninsula, the city saw extensive tracts of land developed through construction breakwaters and filling them with gravel and other filler materials. Present day Beacon Street sits atop the Mill Dam, the first attempt at thwarting the water which ended up as an engineering flop. The capitol building sits atop the former site of Beacon Hill, which was leveled and used to fill in Mill Pond to create Haymarket Square. Some of the historical sites around the area are the Boston Common, Bunker Hill Monument, Boston Children's Museum, Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, Isabella Gardner Museum, John F. Kennedy Library & Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Faneuil Hall and The Prudential Center.
