All over Venice, California, you'll see signs prohibiting vehicles over 8 feet tall from parking at night. It seems an odd restriction until you learn Venice has a large community of homeless people who live in campers and RVs. In a thought-provoking new play at Busboys and Poets, you'll look at these beachfront shelters through the eyes of Gloria West, a former car salesperson who drives from Illinois to Venice after being laid off. She chooses to live in her Lincoln Town Car by the beach, and that's where she learns way more about the world and herself than she ever could have imagined.

The Catholic University of America Department of Drama presents Shakespeare's passionate drama about love, jealousy and redemption, retold in the Latino style of magical realism and set in pre-Revolutionary Mexico, where powerful Dons ruled like Kings. A full-length musical inspired by traditional Mexican folk music and based on Shakespeare's "The Winter's Tale", the story enchantingly unfolds through song, words and dance. The adaptation's book and lyrics are by Kathleen Cahill, composed and orchestrated by Deborah Wicks La Puma, and directed and choreographed by MFA candidate Elena Velasco.

»Julius Caesar

November 23, 2014 7:00 PM

Deep in the heart of the capital, a murderous political intrigue unfolds as Folger Theatre stages "Julius Caesar", the Shakespeare "history play" that remains intensely relevant to contemporary audiences. More scandalous than "Scandal" and more devious than "House of Cards", "Julius Caesar" finds its title character locked in a life-and-death struggle for power with his former "friends, Romans, countrymen," Brutus and Cassius. The actions of these friends-turned-conspirators set off a civil war at the dawn of the Roman Empire. Robert Richmond directs this gripping new production at Folger Elizabethan Theatre.

Though it has recently relocated to Southern California, Pepper promises to never stop representing its home island of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Pepper first started creating its unique blend of reggae, rock and dub jams in 1996 when members Bret Bollinger and Kaleo Wassman met in middle school. After going through a number of drummers, the pair found Yesod WIlliams at a party and convinced him to take on the roll. The trio then moved to San Diego, California to begin recording as well as touring.
