Formed more than 100 years ago, to educate people on the harsh growing conditions in Alberta, the Calgary Horticultural Society is one of the largest and most active horticultural societies in Canada. And you don't have to have a green thumb to belong to it. The Calgary Horticulture Society offers a number of membership benefits, including regular speakers and an extensive gardening library. The history of the Temple B'nai Tikvah dates back to 1979, when it was established by Ron Bing and his wife. The name Temple B'nai Tikvah, meaning 'Children of Hope' was given by Steven Switzer, one of the early members of the temple. This community saw humble beginnings, being a congregation with just 13 families. Under the guidance of the different rabbis, who have headed this temple, the congregation expanded and grew stronger. In 2004 they could finally boast of this beautiful temple in Calgary's Britannia neighborhood. Music being an integral part of Temple B'nai Tikvah, Jewish music concerts are regularly conducted here.
Introducing clients of all ages to the joys of indigenous drumming, One World Drum Company offers lessons and workshops in beginner hand drumming, Afro-Cuban and African styles, didgeridoo techniques, natural voice, "ecstatic" dance, and drum construction. Twice each month the school holds open drum circles where beginners and pros can come and bang away all evening. They even supply the instruments. Decidedly Jazz Danceworks is Canada's first professional jazz dance performance company as well as a studio offering dance instruction. Training ranges from regular drop-in classes to full course programs and cover a number of dance styles including African, funk, salsa and tap. There is something available for dancers of all ages and abilities. The dancers are known in Calgary for their energetic performances, and the June show at Max Bell Theater is always wild and engaging.
