»Vilma Palma, Andrea Echeverri and Fabulosos Cadillacs Tribute Band

    July 10, 2014 7:30 PM

Andrea Echeverri is a singer/songwriter from Bogota, Colombia who is widely-known as one of the more outspoken proponents of feminism on the modern South American music scene. With a soft, melodic sound that highlights her acoustic guitar playing, she released her eponymous debut album in 2005. Building off an alternative rock style that brought a handful of American female songwriters to prominence in the 1990s, Echeverri's sound is equally matched by her political ideologies and often explicit, confrontational lyrics.

    »Rodney King

    July 10, 2014 8:00 PM

Though Rodney King's name burst into public consciousness more than 20 years ago, the race issues associated with him are as relevant today as they were then. Actor-writer Roger Guenveur Smith uses history and improvised poetry (or "verbal jazz" as the "L.A. Times" calls it) to capture the life of the flawed, good-hearted everyman who unintentionally became the nation's first reality TV star. From the initial incident of police brutality to the controversial trial verdict to the eruption of the L.A. riots and up to today, Smith takes you on a journey that's both heroic and tragic -- and endlessly moving. Smith's list of acting credits include, among others, a bevy of Spike Lee films ("Do the Right Thing", "Malcolm X", "Summer of Sam"), the movie "American Gangster", and the HBO series "K Street" and "Oz". "Rodney King" is not Smith's first solo show about an American icon. He's written and performed pieces on Frederick Douglass, Huey P. Newton (co-founder of the Black Panthers), Bob Marley, Jean-Michel Basquiat and other fascinating figures.
