»Tenacious D

December 28, 2014 9:00 PM

The two members of the Tenacious D first met in 1994 when they started performing together as members of Los Angeles-based theater troupe The Actors Gang. At fist there was somewhat of a rivalry between the two, because Gass, who was a talented guitarist, felt threatened by Black--who was the go-to musician for The Actor's Gang.Eventually overcoming their animosity and making a brotherly alliance, the two decided to form a band--Tenacious D.The duo created a style of acoustic metal with self-deprecating lyrics, and after playing a number of open mic nights at small clubs around the Los Angeles region, the duo was noticed and offered a TV show with HBO.With the help of comedic minds Jack Black and Bob Odenkirk, Tenacious D created a TV show for itself that traced the origins of the group and its journey as it fell in and out of mythological pitfalls.Airing intermittently between 1997 and 2000, the series was eventually canceled. The D continued to play shows around Los Angeles and at a show at the Viper Room in Hollywood, Black and Gass met Foo Fighters frontman and ex Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, who was impressed with their performance. Appearing in a cameo in the Foo Fighters single "Learn to Fly" music video, the popularity of Tenacious D continued to grow as the duo landed opening slots for large bands like Pearl Jam, Beck as well as the Foo Fighters. In 2000, Tenacious D signed with Epic Records and started working on its self-titled debut album with noted production team the Dust Brothers as well as an assortment of musicians, including Phish's Page McConnell on keyboards and Grohl on drums.

»Huey Lewis and The News

December 30, 2014 9:00 PM

Huey Lewis and the News is a pop/rock band from San Francisco that combines the backbone of blues and rock and roll with the sweet harmonies of soul and doo wop. The band's origins go back as far as 1979, but it wasn't until the mid-1980's that Huey Lewis and the News dropped a series of hit songs that would catapult the group into the mainstream spot light. Tracks such as "Hip to Be Square" and "The Power of Love" earned the band an international following and solidified it as a pop music icon throughout the 20th century. Although Huey Lewis and the News has experienced significant changes to its lineups, the band is still led by three original founders, front man Huey Lewis, keyboardist Sean Hopper and drummer Bill Gibson, who continue to record albums and stage live performances.

»Chris Robinson Brotherhood

January 01, 2015 9:00 PM

With the Black Crowes on a hiatus, word of a lead singer Chris Robinson's new project began circulating in 2010 and was confirmed on the last night of the Crowes' Say Goodnight to the Bad Guys farewell tour. Dubbed the Chris Robinson Brotherhood, the band introduced itself to the music scene as a psychedelic folk/blues act on a tour of California in March of 2012 with Robinson on lead vocals, Neal Casal on guitar, Muddy Dutton on bass and George Sluppick on drums. After extending its tour across the US, the Chris Robinson Brotherhood released its debut album Big Moon Ritual, in the summer of 2012 followed by a companion album, The Magic Door in the fall.

»Flaming Lips

January 02, 2015 9:00 PM

Formed in Oklahoma City in 1993, The Flaming Lips is a rock band with some serious psychedelic undercurrents. The band's live shows are known to involve costumes, confetti, giant hamster balls and what's considered by many to be amazing music. Though front man Wayne Coyne is notorious for his ego, trash-talking and general belief that he is God, the band does create well-crafted songs and puts on if nothing else, an entirely entertaining live show.
