The Orwells is a rock and roll band from Chicago that describes its sound as flower punk. After forming in 2009, the band exposed its frustration about America, girls and school through a mix of blues rock, garage and punk music and captured the hearts of rebellious-minded audiences across the US. The band released its debut album Remember When, in 2012 with Autumn Ton Records, offering an ode to rock and roll history while still allowing its modern sounds and anxieties to make up the bulk of its music.

Even though the funk genre as a whole has fallen into a fairly fatigued state, with a good deal of bands that associate themselves to the style of music pandering into cliche territory, there are a few select bands out there keeping funk alive with innovation and a modern approach to song composition. English four-piece The New Mastersounds is one such group. Founded in 1999, the band has managed to gain recognition amid the funk scene with a lively, entirely instrumental sound that showcases snappy drumming, thumpy bass lines and astute organ solos. While The New Mastersounds might not gain widespread popularity or mainstream radio airplay, it is nevertheless a group that's dedicated to keeping the funk genre alive during a time when the music style's tides have almost ebbed into oblivion.

One of the most successful instrumental artists of modern music, Boney James is a saxophonist and songwriter from Lowell, MA who began playing his instrument of choice at age ten. Inspired the Motown hits he grew up listening to, he immediately began working R&B and soul into his jazz fusion music, which was further influenced by his seven year stint of touring and playing sessions with acts like Bobby Caldwell, Tina Marie and the Isley Brothers. James eventually caught the attention of producer Paul Brown, who helped him release his debut album as band leader, Trust. He subsequently signed with Warner Bros. Records and released as string of well-received albums including Seduction, Body Language and Sweet Thing. James earned his first Grammy Award for his 2001 record Ride, and has since continued to release solo and collaboration records to critical acclaim.

Cat Power is the moniker of New York-based singer/songwriter Chan Marshall who rose to prominence in the early-1990s with a minimalist folk style that capitalized off sparse guitar and piano playing as well as Marshall's breathy vocals. The soft pop arrangements Cat Power is famous for are occasionally timid, but more often than not extremely heartfelt and self concerting. Opting to do somewhat of an about face with her 2012 LP, Sun, by incorporating more astute production methods as well as honed electronic elements, Marshall has demonstrated herself to be a musician capable of taking many different artistic paths.

For better or worse, most people know Brother Ali because of his albinism. This characteristic has somewhat defined him, but it does nothing to bespeak the music that he creates. The white rapper is an easily recognizable figure, though, and his condition helps to elevate the talented lyricist, who often dabbles in politically-charged rhymes, above the myriad of other rappers out there.
