Before Ray LaMontagne became a fairly recognizable figure on the adult soft rock scene, he worked in a shoe factory. The life of a mechanized cobbler was a hard one and LaMontagne worked 65 hour weeks quite frequently. One day, after being awakened by a Steven Stills tune, LaMontagne decided to quit his job at the shoe factory and pursue a life as a singer/songwriter. Though this was a mighty ambition to follow, LaMontagne saw it through and after handing a 10 song demo to a record executive, he was awarded a recording contract. His debut album resonated well with a slightly older crowd and even though LaMontagne's songs are mocked by most younger audiences, he's still able to tour and fill up the music halls in which he plays.

Amaranthe is a melodic death metal band that formed in Gothenburg, Sweden in 2008. Originally named Avalanche, the group was forced to change its name after it lost a copyright lawsuit, soon after settling on Amaranthe. The pummeling double bass drum rhythms and growling vocal style of death metal is present in the group's music, but with the addition of vocalist Elize Ryd, so is a distinct pop element that has helped make the band a hit in its native home and around the world. Amaranthe's self-titled debut album was released in 2011.

Amon Amarth is a Viking-themed melodic death metal band from Scandinavia whose name is drawn from an alternative name for J.R.R. Tolkien's Mount Doom. With titles like "Twilight of the Thunder God," "Thor Arise," and "The Crusher," it's not too much to expect that these guys might be extreemly tall tattooed Norsemen.
