Practical Information

Detroit, MI 48201

Detroit is one of America's most historically complex cities with a turbulent, ever-changing history that continues to mystify residents and outsiders alike. Initially founded by French settlers, residents were offered payment in exchange for populating the town during its early stages of growth. After falling into British hands and eventually being ceded to the United States under the Jay Treaty, Detroit was a relatively sleepy fur trading town for most of its 19th Century history. However, this all changed when Henry Ford established his Ford Motor Company in Detroit, inspiring a slew of American auto magnates to set up shop in this growing metropolis. Throughout the first half and middle of the 20th Century, Detroit was a pinnacle of America's manufacturing prowess, producing thousands of automobiles and war equipment. The consequence of white flight and the oil crisis of 1973 began to chip away at the robust industry, and the city fell into eventual decline throughout the 90s and into the new millennium. While there are still abundant abandoned properties and derelict neighborhoods, Detroit is once again encouraging settlers to stake their claim, and city officials and residents await a new era for this once magnificent industrial capitol.
