Centro-Matic is one of several projects spearheaded by multifaceted singer/songwriter, Will Johnson. Like contemporaries such as Wilco and Ryan Adams, the band attempts to combine rollicking indie rock with healthy doses of alternative country twang. Johnson formed the band in Denton, Texas in 1995, originally treating it as a side-project to other groups he was playing with at the time. By 1997, Centro-Matic was a fleshed-out band that began to horde the majority of his at turns melancholic and visceral songwriting output. Whether crooning a heartbroken, introspective ballad or carrying a stomping roots-rock track, Johnson's talents as a vastly underrated modern songwriter continue to shine through in Centro-Matic.

Texas-born musician Joe Ely has played with everyone from Bruce Springsteen and Lyle Lovett to Uncle Tupelo and the Clash. Ely started his career in the seminal country-folk band The Flatlanders and has since released a string of well-received albums that explore everything from rock to honky-tonk. In his long and varied career, one constant has been the skillful consistency of both his performances and original compositions.
