Formed in the burgeoning rock and roll scene of 1970s London, America is a folk rock band that was originally composed of three half-American, half-British artists who met while attending high school in the mid-1960s. Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek released their band's self-titled debut studio album in 1971, and while the record was initially received with moderate success, America decided to records several additional songs, including the worldwide hit, "A Horse with No Name." The band re-released its debut with the new songs, and the record quickly saw international acclaim. The band rode the wave of its sudden success throughout the 1970s with album including 1974's Holiday, and 1975's Hearts. Though Peek quit the band in 1977 as America's popularity began to decline, Beckley and Bunnell continued on as a duo and eventually earned mainstream attention once again with the 1982 single "You Can Do Magic. America continues to release new music, including its 2011 studio album Black Pages, while performing worldwide with a new backing band.

    »Keith Urban

    July 24, 2014 7:00 PM

Fans who are only familiar with the modern country pop and twangy vocals of his songs might be surprised to learn that Keith Urban was actually born and raised in Australia and New Zealand. Eventually making the move to follow his passion for a decidedly more American genre, Urban headed to country music's primary hub, Nashville. Though he's known for his guitar playing on stage, Urban can also play banjo, piano, bass and mandolin, which he incorporates into his albums. Ultimately, however, Urban's music is defined by its strict adherence to modern country radio standards, combining glossy pop and occasional traces of country's legacy to ensure mass appeal.

    »Gogol Bordello

    July 24, 2014 8:00 PM

At its core, Gogol Bordello is a band that mixes Eastern European musical influences with modern rock and punk sensibilities to create a style of music that has been deemed Gypsy Punk. Formed in 1999 in the Lower East Side of New York City by a group of immigrants, the band initially played purist gypsy music at Russian weddings. After dropping a single with more modern western influences to much acclaim, Gogol Bordello established itself as a band unafraid to do its own thing. Entertaining audiences through high energy shows with theatrical elements haphazardly thrown in, that typically feature the band playing an unusual assortment of instruments and dancing like maniacs, Gogol Bordello is a live performance not to be missed.
