The Ontario Museum of History and Art aims to expand the community's knowledge of local culture through a free museum, educational programs, and special events. The museum welcomes school groups (call to make an appointment for different days or times) and organizes various outreach programs and field trips throughout the year. Please note that only cash and checks are accepted at the gift shop.
This historical park and museum called the Jensen Alvarado Ranch is spread over 32 acres ( 13 hectares) of land. With a commanding view of the Riverside, the Ranch was started by a retired sea captain. The park offers a great view into the life of the past i.e. the 1880's. The tours are available for the people with a well furnished home, with exclusive furniture and utensils of the former owner of the house. The park at the Riverside is a worth a visit when one plans a visit to this museum.
This museum has a permanent collection of about 1,200 objects which represent various periods and regions, yet focuses on ancient art, contemporary art, and ceramics. The museum has about 7,500 square feet of gallery space that allows not only a continuous display of a substantial part of the museum's permanent holdings, but also a dynamic schedule of visiting exhibitions.
Established in 1982, the Southern California Medical Museum is one of its kind in the southern part of the Golden State. Featuring all medical related artifacts used through the ages, it highlights the progress of different medical specialties. Interesting exhibits include a life-size Doctor's Office, a surgeon's kit from the Civil War and a large collection of medicines and herbs collected over decades. Open by appointments only, this museum makes for a thoroughly interesting visit.
The Planes of Fame Air Museum was started in 1957 by Edward Maloney, a collector of WWII aircrafts. Ever since, the museum has been collecting these historic machines, some of which are the only remaining ones of their kind. The museum features the largest collection of Japanese aircrafts in the world. Being a living history museum, these aircrafts still get used today, so check out the schedule of air shows to see history in action.
California Museum of Photography is located in the University of California at Riverside. The museum displays different photographic exhibits, featuring both modern and historic photographs through different mediums. The first Thursday of every month the museum is free from 6p to 9p.
Dedicated to anthropology, natural science and history, Riverside Metropolitan Museum was established in 1924. The Nature Lab, with its collection of local plant and animal forms, and the Waterwise Garden, teaching visitors about water conservation, are two of the permanent exhibits at the museum. The historic Heritage and Harada houses are also managed by the Riverside Metropolitan Museum.
The Yanks Air Museum is a highly significant museum of aircraft and articrafts. It is a prominent site in the city of Chino in the U.S. State of California and is an excellent aviation museum. The museum features American World War II dive bombers and fighters. Check website for more details.
Situated just a stone's throw away from the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, Riverside Art Museum is as well known for its displays and exhibitions as it is for the building it is housed in. The combination of Classical and Mediterranean architecture is truly impressive, and the 1929 building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2009. As for the museum itself, it hosts many traveling exhibitions every year, and also organizes educational programs.
Dedicated to preserving the state's motorsport legacy, Riverside International Automotive Museum was opened in 2007. Motorsport fans will enjoy going through Ontario Motor Speedway and Riverside International Raceway memorabilia, in addition to the complete collection of Maserati models available in the country since 1951. There is also an exhibit dedicated to local hero Dan Gurney.
Heritage House was built in 1891 and serves today as a historical tribute to that era. The furniture is original from the house and the people who lived there in the beginning (a wealthy orange-ranching widow). Your guided tour will take you to both floors, as well as the servants' quarters out back. Take the kids on this tour for they will be able to learn a lot about Riverside's history; and enjoy exploring the many rooms and areas of the house. History comes to life when it is seen exactly as it was lived. The museum/house is closed to public viewing in the months of July and August but on other days, admission is free but, donations are welcome.
The Sherman Indian Museum is a museum that chronicles and displays exhibits pertaining to the historical Sherman Indian High School. Its vast collection includes school's year books, school memorabilia and many other objects. Check website for more details.
