James Timothy Holland, Jr. is a Portland-based hip-hop artist who creates music under the moniker Sole. A mainstay in the city's underground community, he has worked in various hip-hop groups including Northern Exposure, Live Poets, Deep Puddle Dynamics and his own outfit, Sole and the Skyrider Band. Known for his dense lyrics and use of abstract metaphors and dark sarcasm, he rejects traditional hip-hop themes and instead opts to offer his own stream of conscious poetry through his music.

Abigail Washburn is a claw hammer banjo player from Illinois--claw hammer is the term used to describe banjo players who use a down-picking motion to play instead of the standard way of rolling the fingers up along the strings. Song of the Travelling Daughter, her 2005 debut, was produced by Bela Fleck, who she later formed the band Sparrow Quartet with. Her smoky voice lends itself well to her folk songs, especially when she holds out her delicate legato notes, allowing the listener to hear the voice fade into a whisper.

Dirty Heads is a reggae-rock band from Huntington Beach, California that was started after founding members Jared "Dirty J" Watson met Dustin "Duddy B" Bushnell whilst attending a high school party. After bonding over a sharedappreciationof music, the two would go on to recruit other musicians and establish a unique musical style for itself that blended elements of roots rock, reggae and hip-hop into a cohesive whole. Dirty Heads released its debut LP, Any Port in a Storm, in 2008 and the album helped attract a fairly young fan base that liked the sunny, beach-friendly vibe the group interjects into its music.
