Dance the night away, or just watch others in the spacious Spanish Ballroom at Glen Echo Park in Maryland. Fridays feature square, contra and country dances. On Saturdays hear big band, Cajun, swing and R&B. Sundays are reserved for intermediate and advanced contra and square dancers. With the exception of contra, the public is welcome to watch, join in or take a lesson.
Go dancing on the 7,200-square foot, floating, maple dance floor. Each dance begins with a dance lesson. There is plenty of parking. Call for schedule. Can be rented on Sat nights regarding events.
Located on the DC side of the Maryland-District line, Takoma Station has long been hosting some of the finest local jazz acts in the area. This street-level establishment glows with blond wood and soft lighting. The large crowds that gather here can be seen from the street through a large plate-glass window. Although jazz is usually the featured entertainment, R&B and reggae acts also appear regularly. Sneakers and athletic wear are strictly prohibited. A full menu is available and includes burgers, sandwiches and the like.

This typical American eatery, located uptown, will cater to all your gastronomic needs. Be it the regular burgers and pizzas or the yellowfin tuna, you'll find it all here. There are more than 24 kinds of beer available on tap and 25 wines by the glass. End your meal with desserts that melt in your mouth with a chocolate truffle cake would do the trick. Come by on Sunday for the live Jazz Sunday Brunch where you can feast on favorites like eggs chesapeake or the Texas scramble. If you are one for outdoors, you can take your seat in the outdoor dining area, which seats more than 100 people at a time. Chef Geoff's also hosts events.
The mood at Nanny O'Brien's is authentically Irish, from the cozy narrow space to the warm social atmosphere, the pub has a neighborhood feel. Best of all, local bands play good folk, bluegrass and Irish music on Wednesday through Saturday evenings. Often, the crowd is invited to join in. There is the standard pub food here, but it seems to have a special, home-cooked flavor. Grilled cheese, rich chowders and Irish stew are favorites. Of course, the traditional Irish dish, corned beef and cabbage, is also served.
Murphy's of DC is an energetic pub that offers a variety of settings, each with its own style. The outdoor patio is always crowded. Inside, a cozy room has a fireplace, bar and comfortable seating and the main area is set up for live music, which is the draw on Thursday through Sunday nights. The menu is full of Irish classics, including fish and chips, meat pies and Irish stew. There are also the standard burgers and sandwiches.
Chief Ike's Mambo Room is all about the serious business of showing patrons a good time. With its wildly varied attractions each night, a wide range of people—from college students to professionals—enjoy drink specials and music. Professional musicians take center stage on Tuesday nights, local DJ legend Stella Neptune spins dance tunes a couple times a week and "Gross National Product", a political satire troupe—entertains the crowd on weekend nights. Chief Ike's Mambo Room is open daily 9 pm onwards.
With an atmosphere that borders on dive, a large number of domestic and imported beers on tap, and boisterous live music, it is small wonder that the Wonderland Ballroom has become a local favorite. Unlike some of the trendier establishments in the city, this unpretentious bar offers a laid-back vibe with its worn wood-paneled interior and roomy outdoor patio (a great place to cool off after a bout of dancing inside). Also be sure to check out the pub-grub menu, with such notable favorites as the Motor City Chili Dog. When in search of a night out that doesn't require the latest in fashion, or if you just want to share an inexpensive pint with new friends, the Wonderland Ballroom has it covered in the Columbia Heights / Mount Pleasant district.
