Nas is a rapper with a turbulent past. Born Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones, he grew up in the projects of New York City, dropped out of school in the eighth grade and soon began making a name for himself as a rapper. He quickly gained clout as a prodigious lyricist, and in 1991 he performed at Main Source's "Live at the Barbeque," under his then alias, Nasty Nas. Soon, he was making a name for himself as one of America's premier rappers with monumental albums like 1994's Illmatic--an LP that has prompted many to say that Nas basically invented "good rap music." Famous for his feud with Jay-Z in 2001, Nas has gone on to collaborate with rap artists like P. Diddy, Kanye West and Dr. Dre.

Adelaide's uproarious Schützenfest is the world's second largest German shooting festival after the one in Hannover. More than 30,000 people take part in the revelry each year, held over two days west of the city centre in Bonython Park. Highlights include hearty food and ales, Oompah bands, folk dancing, local pop groups and of course a shooting competition. The festivities wind up with a flurry of fireworks. It is likely to be very hot and sunny at this time of year, so wear a hat and bring sunscreen.

»Eddie Izzard: Force Majeure

January 31, 2015 8:00 PM

Eddie Izzard is a stand-up comedian and actor based in London, whose tour de force career in comedy has yielded several successful comedy tours, roles in critically acclaimed films and television series. Particularly known for his witty, rambling comic monologue as well as his predilection for wearing women's clothing on-stage, Izzard has not only done much to advance stand-up comedy into more intellectually rigorous territory, but has also increased the public's awareness and acceptance of transvestism perhaps more than any entertainer that came before him. Consistently ranked by critics as one of the top five British comedians performing today, as well as earning multiple awards for his work in comedy, Eddie Izzard continues to be a legend on the comedy circuit and his live shows in particular are not to be missed.

»Johnny Marr

February 02, 2015 7:00 PM

By the time he decided to leave The Smiths and his turbulent but prolific songwriting partnership with Morrissey behind in 1987, Johnny Marr had solidified himself as one of the era's more influential guitarists, particularly on the britpop genre that followed in the 1990s. After spending some time as a member of The Pretenders, The The and Electronic as well as laying down substantial time as a sought after session guitarist, he formed Johnny Marr and the Healers in 2000. With his new band, he released Boomsland, in 2003 and went on to release work as part of Modest Mouse, The Cribs and 7 Worlds Collide throughout the 2000s. Marr finally released his own solo album, The Messenger, in 2013 but is still remembered today as the iconic guitarist and Morissey's partner from The Smiths.

The 1988 comedy/horror movie Killer Klowns From Outer Space was written and produced by Charles Chiodo, Edward Chiodo and Stephen Chiodo. After becoming fans of the cult film, a group of musicians from Davison, Michigan (a suburb of Flint) decided it was necessary to name their band after the Chiodos brothers--an homage of sorts. Since taking up the Chiodos name, the post-hardcore band has been busy releasing material and touring the country in search of a wide fan base.
