»Other Desert Cities

February 27, 2015 8:00 PM

Recently one of the hottest tickets on Broadway and a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize, Jon Robin Baitz's "Other Desert Cities" brings dysfunctional family drama to new heights. Christmas is always somewhat surreal in Palm Springs. It's made even more so this year when Brooke returns home after a long absence to present her conservative parents with a tell-all confessional novel that exposes a pivotal event in their family history. Now, old wounds are reopened, childhood memories are tested and the Wyeth clan learns that some secrets can't stay buried forever. This production at the Citadel Theatre in Chicago is directed by Mark Lococo.

February 27, 2015 10:00 AM

Written by Hans Christian Andersen, The Princes and the Pea is a beloved fairy tale that tells the story of a prince who is seeking a princess, though his quest for a wife proves difficult, as he cannot be certain that any of the women he meets are true princesses. When a young woman appears at the castle doors seeking shelter from a stormy, he and his mother invite her in to stay for the night. While the mystery woman claims she is a princess, the queen decides to test her guest's honor by placing a single pea under 20 mattresses and 20 feather beds on the bed the woman is to sleep on. The next morning, the woman regales the queen with her sleepless night, claiming that she was kept awake by something hard in the bed. With this knowledge, the prince rejoiced and decides to marry her, because only a real princess would have the sensitivity to feel a pea through so much bedding.

»The Coop Featuring Egi, Chachuba

February 27, 2015 9:45 PM

Intent on blurring the lines between electronic production and organic instrumentation, Chicago-based band The Coop is a group that's helping stoke the fire of the evolution of the modern electronic scene. The instrumental quartet released its debut LP, Internalize, in 2011 but despite the band's well-honed approach to recording, The Coop is primarily a live act, and the group's ability to improvise as a collective is something to behold. With rhythmic propulsion and tasteful saxophone accompaniments, many of The Coop's songs have a distinctive quality that is both dance-friendly and introspective.

»Sister Hazel With Vintage Blue

February 27, 2015 8:00 PM

Florida band Sister Hazel is one of the 1990s alternative rock music heroes, influencing an entire generation of angst-ridden teens and punk rock inheritors. The band had significant commercial success during the 1990s heyday, however they have grown into a new era playing host to an annual "Rock Boat" cruise, where the band plays alongside other musical guests. Continuing to release music into their middle age, the band members have gracefully settled into a more modest, though no less passionate following that will likely keep this band afloat for years to come.
