This island is currently closed to visitors and is set to open at some point in 2014. Ellis Island dates back to 1894 when it was used as the immigrant gateway to America. Today, this 27.5 acre island is best known for the immigration museum that is housed in the former immigration station complex! Over the years, the island has undergone major changes and now includes hospitals, dormitory buildings and a powerhouse apart from the Ellis Island Immigration Museum building. With a record 2 million visitors annually, the island has become one of the top tourist destinations in New York. The island also promises spectacular views of the Statue of Liberty.
