Ny's Next Top Drag Queen Contest

New York, NY 10010
New Yorks Next Top Drag Queen Contest The sparkles are already flying as ten hard-working cross-dressers are going toe to toe in the two-week first round of competition of the 2nd annual “New York’s Next Top Drag Queen Contest.” The five-week juried affair, hosted by the Metropolitan Room, 34 West 22nd Street, began on Monday and climaxes on Monday May 5 (with no show on April 7). Hosted this year by Holly Dae, the competish pits ten vigorously pre-screened drag queen artistes, who will be judged not by looks alone but by how well they sing and entertain. It will be a seemingly unending parade of new outfits, special guests, surprise guest judges and a mystery judge whose identity will only be revealed at the contest’s over-the-top finale. The contest’s reining first Top Drag Queen is Titiana Steele, who stole our hearts and was fawned over throughout the year while she was forced to headline monthly shows from June to December. Steele holds on to her throne until May 5. “New York’s Next Top Drag Queen Contest” is produced by the Metropolitan Room and Joseph Macchia. The contest’s permanent judges include the Broadway veteran and cabaret star T. Oliver Reid (winner 2011 MetroStar; 2012 MAC debut, and 2013 Bistro), and Frankie C. (columnist for Odyssey Magazine), and Macchia, the MAC and Bistro award-winning cabaret producer of “Cabaret Cares,” “Broadway on 22nd Street” and “Boys Night Out.” The mystery judge will remain “closeted” until the very end. The elimination rounds are as follows: March 30 and April 6 (8 first-round contestants perform two new songs each week); April 13 (6 semifinalists present mini sets, offering a glimpse of what a full show will be); April 20 (4 finalists sing a new song, a repeat song and a theme song); April 27 (4 finalists sing a new song, a repeat song and a theme song); May 4 finale (the 4 finialists sing a new song and make a heartfelt appeal for why they deserve to wear the crown; the finale features several special guests). All shows are Mondays at 7pm. The music charge is $15 plus a two-drink minimum.

Aurora Barnes

Manufacturing illusions/Shattered rainbows coming down/I’m afraid of losing/It’s a fine line I could write/Then I’d be found ” – Aurora Barnes (from “Fair Game”) New York City-based singer, songwriter and activist Aurora Barnes creates fiery music that tells vivid stories of love, heartbreak, joy, struggle and human resiliency, which are all captured on her debut EP, Fair Game. Aurora uses intricate melodies and harmonies as a vehicle for her lyrics, painting pictures that explore themes of unrequited love and sexism, stand-by-your-man resolve and social uprising, disillusionment and desire. Her vocal performances demonstrate her total connection to the material – unique for a singer nowadays. Aurora has always been fascinated by the ability of musicians to capture complex emotions and the spirit of a particular moment in history. She was raised in uptown Manhattan surrounded by passionate members of the civil rights, women’s rights, labor and anti-war movements, learning early on the importance of a lifelong commitment to political and social activism. Raised on everyone from Bob Dylan to Stephen Sondheim, Nina Simone to Bonnie Raitt, Aurora grew to understand that the words she spoke and the ones she wrote must be deliberate and meaningful. As a young child Aurora’s natural aptitude for music and acting was apparent when she joined TADA! Youth Theater (for musical theater) and Opus 118 East Harlem Violin Program. As a young violinist, she played alongside legends Itzhak Perlman and Isaac Stern and was profiled in the Oscar-nominated documentary Small Wonders. She continued to develop as a singer, storyteller and actress, working with coaches Adrienne Angel and Harold Guskin, and performing in NYC venues like The Bitter End, Nuyorican Poet’s Café and The Knitting Factory. “Aurora has a beautiful singing voice with wonderful technique and has made a great impression in the acting industry.” – Bernadette Peters
