»China Town

There is no actual Chinatown area in Halifax, so this large restaurant gets all the fame with the name. It's a short drive from the downtown area, north on the Bedford Highway. A large patio overlooks the Bedford Basin and the restaurant's own dock. The menu tries to cater to all types of Chinese food-lovers, so there are a few hot dishes sprinkled in with your basic deep-fried shrimp and broccoli-beef. The combination platter for two, which includes egg rolls and soup, is a hefty meal; all portions are generous. Timings vary for public holidays, call ahead for details.

The elegantly designed eatery also has a lounge area where you can gingerly sip the intoxicating house cocktails, martinis, and wines offered here. The food is a rich mix of seafood and contemporary meat and vegetable dishes. You can try their delicious and juicy Lobster Crepes, Lobster Phyllo or Seared Halibut, which are all local delicacies sprinkled with international influences. »Highlife Cafe

Here is a great little place for a meal, from breakfast to dinner. The decor invites exploration and you'll be hopping up from the table now and then for a closer look at the drums, or perhaps or the beautiful suit for sale and hanging in the corner. The food is delicious African cuisine that will transport you straight to the deserts of the continent even while in the chilly weather of Canada. Try the curried chicken and beef stew or, for the vegetarians, plantain and rice. Portions are generous and the fire from the hot sauce can be quenched with a bit of mango juice if you go overboard.

The food is in competition with the view from the restaurant; it's difficult to say which is more exciting, the Halifax skyline by candle light or the trout with bourbon butter sauce.

Escargot is not really considered seafood in Halifax, and this restaurant in the Citadel Hotel, is one of a few that offers the delicious little mollusks. Those seeking lighter fare will be pleasantly surprised by the lobster salad which contains lobster meat and fresh sliced mango atop exotic greens. Heartier eaters will find lamb Evangeline a treat which is essentially a boneless rack of lamb on a bed of spinach. The room at botaniCa Restaurant and Lounge sports tablecloths with warm earth tones under subdued lighting. Comfort is the key here and the serving staff is alert and friendly.
