»Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens

Located in an 1890s tri-domed Victorian glass conservatory on the grounds of South Park and created by NY Central Park designer Frederick Law Olmsted, these gardens feature exotic flowers and plants from around the world. The gardens are operated by the Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Highlights include an orchid and bromeliad house, herb collection, and waterfall. There are also seasonal shows such as Spring Flowers, All-American Annuals in summer, and December Poinsettias.

»South Park Golf Course

Located in the South Buffalo area close to the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, this 9-hole public course offers a challenging 2743 yards with par at 35. There's plenty of water to skirt around, making the course more difficult than it seems at first. The pro shop is fully equipped; pull carts are available as well as rental clubs. The club has a driving range and putting green for pre-round practice, and a bar for post-round practice.

»Tifft Nature Preserve

Located three miles from downtown Buffalo on the Lake Erie shoreline, this unique urban nature reserve offers 265 acres of trails, anachronistic boardwalks and a 75-acre marsh. This preserve is the environmental education site for the Buffalo Museum of Science and it's perfect for bird-watching, hiking, and family picnics—not to mention snowshoeing and cross-country skiing during the cold winters. In the 1950s, the site was used as a refuse dump, but thankfully it was converted to a nature preserve in the 1980's. Admission is free but donations are requested.

»NFTA Boat Harbor

This small-boat marina holds a whopping 1,000 slips, making it the largest in New York State. Among the services offered are a fish cleaning station, boat ramp, transient docks, marine shops and services, fuel and pump-out, and parking for more than 1000 cars and trailers. There are also well-maintained public washrooms and the marina is conveniently located in the south side of the city, across from the Tifft Nature Preserve and with easy access to the Buffalo Skyway. It is open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset.

This is the southern terminus of the Frederick Law Olmsted system of parks in Buffalo, and the perfect place for a quiet lunch or walk when business or pleasure takes you to South Buffalo or the nearby suburbs. The year-round ice rink and swimming pool are complemented by one of Buffalo's three public golf courses, featuring the nine-hole Cazenovia Golf Course and pro shop. Hours for the ice rink and pool will vary, so call ahead before putting your skates or bathing suit on.

Built within South Buffalo's Cazenovia Park and part of the Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy, this nine-hole par-36 course has been entertaining golfers since 1929. The course is 3,129 yards long and offers busy city dwellers the chance to flail away without having to drive dozens of miles to hit the range. The course rating is 68.7 and it has a slope rating of 105. The course has a pro shop, driving range and chipping green and a snack bar that seats 30. You can also rent, clubs, pull carts and other golf accessories.

»Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame

This sports hall of fame resides on the lower level of the HSBC Arena. At the moment, there are more than 100 inductees, including players from the NHL's Buffalo Sabres, the NFL's Buffalo Bills, and baseball's Buffalo Bisons. The hall, in the atrium next to the Sabres' store, includes sports memorabilia, detailed information, interactive computer stations, and audio and video presentations.

This waterfront museum, located across from First Niagara Center, salutes all branches of the United States Armed Forces, with special emphasis on veterans from Western New York. Visitors can tour a World War II submarine, a destroyer and a guided missile cruiser. There are military artifacts such as tanks, aircraft and memorabilia, including an interesting collection from the Polish Armed Forces.

The marina is a public one, so it is very popular with the entire city and it's very convenient for weekend sailors. This society in downtown Buffalo close to Dunn Tire Park and Erie Basin Marina is dedicated to the preservation of the area's rapidly fading maritime past. Its holdings include hundreds of thousands of documents, photos, oral histories and artifacts. The museum features a library, shop, offices, research labs, photo dark room and display area. The society has loaned its materials to local institutions including the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society. Their showcases change frequently as they are always acquiring new materials.

This beautiful 18,025 seat facility has been the home of Buffalo Bisons baseball since 1987, and it is the Triple-A affiliate of MLB's Toronto Blue Jays. The stadium has intimate seating and there are also group facilities available, as well as Pettibone's Grille for dinner while you enjoy the game or lunch year-round. Also available whether or not there's a game is the Bison's official team shop, it features a variety of souvenir gifts, t-shirts, jerseys, etc.
