The heaven for all Jazz lovers in and around Chatham, the New Apartment Lounge promises some of the very best in jazz by Von Freeman and group who perform here on Tuesday nights. Reminiscent of the 50's, the interiors have nothing to boast of but are comfortable to lounge around while you listen to some soulful jazz. The drinks menu is not extensive but the limited collection meets your need for alcohol. Buying a drink is a must if you plan to sit at the bar. Even with these minor shortcomings, the lounge is a popular place for it's passion for Jazz. Featured frequently, struggling musicians enliven the scene with their original compositions and fresh voices.
The Woodlawn Tap, known for its late owner, Jimmy, is a Hyde Park institution. Students from the venerable University of Chicago are known to flock here, before, after, and sometimes even during classes. Don't leave without trying one of Jimmy's famous cheeseburgers, and make sure to eavesdrop on some of the interesting (and decidedly out-of-place) conversations.
