»Cirque Du Soleil Presents Amaluna

March 01, 2015 8:00 PM

Written and directed by Tony Award-winning director, Diane Paulus, Cirque du Soleils 33rd production Amaluna is a celebration of love and a tribute to the work and voice of women.   Tickets are now available by visiting www.cirquedusoleil.com/amaluna or by calling 1-877-9 CIRQUE.   The New York Times urges; The display of female strength is a lovely thing. The New York Post boasts; gorgeous visuals and dazzling circus acts, and San Francisco Chronicle described Amaluna as; sumptuously designed and invigoratingly female-powered.     AMALUNA Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughters coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honors femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.   In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men lands on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prosperas daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony.   Amaluna is a fusion of the words ama, which refers to mother in many languages, and luna, which means moon; a symbol of femininity that evokes both the mother-daughter relationship and the idea of goddess and protector of the planet. Amaluna is also the name of the mysterious island where this magical story unfolds.           A TRIBUTE TO THE WORK AND VOICE OF WOMEN For the first time in Cirque du Soleils history, Amaluna features a cast that comprises 70% women, with a 100% female band. Amaluna is a tribute to the work and voice of women, explains Director of Creation Fernand Rainville. The show is a reflection on balance from a womens perspective, he adds. Director Diane Paulus, winner of a 2013 Tony Award (Pippin) and recently named as one of Time Magazines 100 Most Influential People of 2014, says: I didnt want to build a womens agenda show. I wanted to create a show with women at the center of it, something that had a hidden story that featured women as the heroines. Paulus drew from a series of classical influences when creating the concept of the show; including tales from Greek and Norse mythology, Mozarts The Magic Flute and Shakespeares The Tempest.     CIRQUE DU SOLEIL Some 30 years ago, Cirque du Soleil was but a dream. It was the dream of a small community of travelling performers who would do anything to share their love of the stage, of circus and of the world. The family has grown since then and now includes thousands of dreamerscreators, artists, technicians and workers who toil in the shadows. The dream has become a symbol of Québec pride, an international entertainment company that has brought 35 large-scale shows to life20 of which are still in operation. The company, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in June 2014, has brought wonder and delight to close to 150 million spectators in more than 300 cities on six continents. Cirque du Soleil has close to 4,000 employees, including 1,300 performing artists from close to 50 different countries.     DOWNLOADABLE IMAGES AND VIDEOS Promo Roll:http://s3.amazonaws.com/Chapiteaux/Amaluna/Amaluna-90-sec-2013.zip B-Roll:http://s3.amazonaws.com/Chapiteaux/Amaluna/Amaluna_B-ROLL_H264-2013.zip Photos:http://s3.amazonaws.com/Chapiteaux/Amaluna/Photos_PR_Selection.zip   For more information and images of Cirque du Soleil and Amaluna, please visit our online Press Room at cirquedusoleil.com/press     SPONSORS Amaluna is proud to be presented by Visa Signature, the official presenting sponsor of Cirque du Soleil, in association with MileagePlus United. Cursive is an alternative rock group from Omaha, Nebraska that was formed in 1995. After releasing two albums and touring for a couple of years, the band decided to call it quits in 1998. Soon, however, the members decided that what they had together was something special, unique and rare, and decided to reform in 1998. The newly reunited band applied a more characteristically post-hardcore sound to its sonic aesthetic and managed win over a large swath of new fans by doing so.

»4th Annual Purplelight At Houston City Hall

March 01, 2015 6:30 PM

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network will hold its 4th annual PurpleLight event Sunday, March 1 at 6:30pm at City Hall to celebrate survivors and honor loved ones lost to pancreatic cancer. Onsite registration, check in and the opportunity to decorate luminaries begins at 6pm. During the event, the names will be read of both survivors who have battled the disease and of loved ones lost too soon. Survivors, family and friends in attendance will be asked to stand and illuminate purple glow sticks when the name of their loved one is read. Register a name to be read at www.pancan.org/purplelight/houston_landing.html. Even if you are unable to attend, you can still submit a name. PurpleLight is free of charge, however, donations are welcome and will benefit the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Houston City Hall will be illuminated in purple in recognition of PurpleLight. Houston City Hall is located at 901 Bagby Street in Houston, TX 77002. This is the fourth annual PurpleLIght event for the Houston Affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, the national organization creating hope in a comprehensive way through research, patient support, community outreach and advocacy for a cure. PurpleLight Houston is among 80 PurpleLight events taking place this year in communities across the country, helping to turn the country purple and shine light on the cause. Pancreatic Cancer Action Network events contribute millions of dollars toward the mission of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to advance research, support patients and create hope. Money raised helps fund personalized support for patients, their families and their caregivers. The events also support research grants and advocacy efforts to increase federal pancreatic cancer research funding. This year, an estimated 49,000 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and more than 40,500 will die from the disease. Only 7 percent of those diagnosed survive more than five years. A study by the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, published in the journal Cancer Research, predicts that by 2020 pancreatic cancer will surpass breast and colorectal cancer to become the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States.
