The closest beach to LAX stretches for four miles from El Segundo north to Playa Del Rey. In addition to the normal amenities, Dockweiler State Beach accommodates overnight campers with fire pits and RV campsites with reservations. Other special features of this beach include bike rentals, a bike path, fishing and scuba diving. But perhaps the best and most surprising feature is the quiet and solitude that can be found here despite its proximity to such a large airport. The Ballona Wetlands are the largest remaining coastal wetlands in the Los Angeles region. Once owned by Howard Hughes, today this freshwater marsh is open to the public. Enjoy walking along the perimeter public trail and take in all the natural beauty in the middle of the city.
Located between Dockweiler and Manhattan Beaches is this less crowded beach. Although technically, the beach is in the city of Manhattan Beach, the sparse crowds are mostly due to its proximity to the Chevron Oil Refinery and the lack of some amenities. Despite all that, the beach has lifeguards, rest rooms and showers as well as metered parking, which is usually easy to come by.
This park in the Leimert Park neighborhood is considered the hub of African-American art scene. It has several shops and theaters in the vicinity which makes it a place full of theater artists, musicians, poets, writers and tourists. The World Stage is also located in the same neighborhood.
The Live Oak Park spans nine acres in Manhattan Beach and is one of the most popular outdoor spots in the South Bay. During the off-season, local basketball heroes from the Lakers take advantage of the great basketball courts in this park. There are also tennis courts and baseball fields. The playground is big and has a train that makes the kids squeal with delight. Throughout the park there are large, shady trees and plenty of spots for romantic picnics or family outings.
Star Eco Station is an environmental science and wildlife rescue center that is located in Culver City, a few miles from Downtown Los Angeles. Providing educational tours, field trips and events to students, the place is a famous destination to learn about wildlife. Manhattan Beach is one of the best beaches around due to its proximity to shops and restaurants. The constant entertainment here on weekends comes in many forms, most notably as volleyball and surfing tournaments. This stretch of sand can claim to be both the inspiration and hangout of the Beach Boys in their early days, as well as the birthplace of beach volleyball. The oldest beach volleyball tournament in the world, the Manhattan Beach Open, is held here annually in late July. Limited free parking, metered parking and parking lots are available.

There's a lot to marvel at, from the Mattel Deep Ocean Habitat Tank which harbors White Plume Anemones, Rainbow Stars to the Living Reef Tank. Let your kids gaze in wonder at the Shark Tank and be amused by the eight-legged octopus. The Specimen Tank holds shark eggs, hermit crabs and tongue fish.
