Located in the Shikoku Pilgrimage, Ishiteji Temple is one of the most famous temples in the city. It is the 51st temple of the 88 temples in the holy site and has an architecture that goes way back to the 12th Century. The pervasive premises of the temple include idyllic halls, a pagoda, shrines and more, all built in the typical architecture style of the Kamakura Period. The three storied pagoda and the treasure hall, with beautiful murals, artifacts and intricate carvings, are an eclectic spectacle. There is also a temple located inside a tunnel with intriguing statues and carvings. Thus, the temple represents the rich architecture and spiritual history of Japan.

Originally built in 1603 by Kato Yoshiaki and on top of the Mount Katsuyama, what we see today was restored between 1820 and 1854 after it was destroyed by fire. This monument is visible from most parts of the city and is a admired for the five-story tenshu and wooden structure.
