Unzen is the name of a supposedly dormant volcanic peak that stands 1,359 meters (4,500 feet) tall and lies about an hour east of Nagasaki City. Although the peak is dormant, and hikers are allowed to climb it, a nearby peak spewed ash and smoke during the 1990s, prompting officials to ban climbing there. Unzen is also famous as a hot-spring resort area. There are many excellent onsen in the area, and the views from the elevations are quite impressive.

While all hairdressers will ask you what you want, this is one of those places where you can say, "I leave it up to you; give me something that looks good on me", and they will probably do a good job. The staff is young and hip, and the place is popular, owing in part to its convenient location near the Hamanomachi Arcade. A shampoo & cut starts at 4500 yen, perms & color/cuts start at 7500 yen. There are 700 yen discounts for students.

»Salon de Elle

No, the youth of Japan do not wear their hair straight and black. Anything but! Dreadlocks, Afros, braids, corn-rows, kinked, spiked, with extensions, anything goes. Need some color? They have 54 different hues. This hair and beauty salon is one of those that seems not to be following fashion but inventing it. Although it mainly caters to Japanese customers, they would be delighted to have non-Japanese guests pay a visit. Do note, however, that like most fashionable hair salons in Japan, you will be paying quite a bit to look good. Expect to pay at least several thousand yen.

»Futsukaichi Onsen

The origins of Futsukaichi Onsen date back to 600, when it became a popular resort. In more modern times it has become serene and peaceful. The deluxe hotel offers guests a choice of well-equipped Japanese or Western-style rooms. There are separate men's and women's hot spring bathing facilities. The modern indoor baths are in large oval pools, with a cold tub, and a sauna in the bathing area. Outside are two landscaped open-air pools. The water is radioactive and is used to treat burns, surface wounds, sore limbs, and stress.
