A massive and newly built center in the Northern district of Marseille (the view is brilliant!) attracts all kinds of people and people travel here from far. It has more than 200 shops on only two floors and also the largest "Continent" hypermarket in Europe. There is all you need to find for you, your children, and your entire household. Wander around the alleys as your eyes are enchanted by all that's on offer here. If you get lost, follow the maps and signposts of this shopping city. The entire center is open from Mondays to Saturdays, with varying hours within each department.
As one of the oldest sports in the world, the object of water jousting is to knock your opponent overboard with the help of a wooden lance, to the resounding cheers of your supporters. Spectators usually gather on the shores of the smooth stretch of water around l'Estaque on Sundays from May to September. You can obtain an annual permit for a nominal fee and you'll be provided with all the equipment you need, including the talhola - a Provençal belt. Whether spectator or participant, the joust cannot fail to entertain, as it is, above all else, an excuse to join in a purely festive and fun occasion.
Located in the Law School district, this place was founded on the commitment of serious consumers to high quality food. This association offers fresh produce dairy products, vegetables and meat and promotes a natural life-style. Home-made recipes like chausson à la brandade de morue (mixture of cod paste and crème fraîche) and salmon tarts are prepared on site.
The friendly owners of this place have been selling organically grown fruit, vegetables and herbs for 25 years. The shop also stocks cheese, yogurt and beauty products (all natural obviously).
This superb bookstore is perfectly at home in the magnificent setting of La Vieille Charité. One can leaf through books on art, anthropology, and sociology—art from all periods, and in every form. Each book is more beautiful than the next.
Everyone knows that you can get anything at Fnac. Take, for example, the book selection: books for kids, foreign literature, comic books, humor, economics, and ethnology. It's perfectly laid out, with a defined area for each category. If you're not much for books, you can check out the movie section, and there is also a place to buy tickets for upcoming events. It's possible to spend hours here, browsing or buying, because prices at Fnac are very reasonable. And in case you change your mind, it's incredibly easy to do an exchange. There's really no need to hesitate.
The famous Belgian company: Chocolaterie Léonidas, is known for its sugared almonds and sweet chocolate, which is rich with cream and milk. Taste other Belgian favorites like creamy pralines, ganaches, chocolate dipped candies, marzipans and even sugar free treats for the health conscious. They use less cocoa and fresh cream resulting in a nice, smooth taste; without question, these chocolates are of the highest quality. Calling all chocoholics!
There is no need to search any longer. You can buy authentic Marseille soap in this boutique. It is available in all its forms, perfumed with a variety of aromas. This traditional product, for which Marseille is famous, is packaged in-store. The soaps are all of excellent quality and the shop is very well stocked.
At the heart of the city center, Centre Bourse spans a multitude of shops that promise absolute retail therapy. The grocery section which is named Nouvelles Galeries (New Collection) offers a selection of regional specialities from all over France. From the sausages of Vire to Far Breton, passing through Saint-Marcelin, they sell an excellent range of quality products. Good ideas and full of flavour.
This is a general bookstore, with two vast and incredibly well-stocked floors. It's a reference point in Marseille, since it provides all the learning materials for local children (the annual influx of back-to-school shoppers transforms the first floor into a hive of activity!), not to mention University students and book-worms. The selection is excellent in all categories (history, sociology, fiction, art, current events, foreign literature etc). There's even a music section, where you're welcome to listen to jazz, classical, or world music before you make your selection. You're also invited to leaf through the beautiful books on Marseille and Provence. The sales staff are really friendly, and always available to help you with your search.
