The Virginia Military Institute is the oldest military college in the United States. It is very different from the other institutes as it a college meant strictly for military cadets pursuing their bachelors degree. The courses offered are 14 disciplines in the liberal arts, the sciences and engineering.
George C. Marshall Foundation named in the honor of America's great leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner George C. Marshall. The mission of the organization is to imbibe the qualities like integrity and honesty possessed by Marshall in the young and future US citizens. To further this aim, every year the foundation gives several awards like the 'The George C. Marshall Foundation Award' and 'Andrew J. Goodpaster Award' to individuals who work towards the betterment of poor and offer their services voluntarily. It also has museum and a research library on-site. The museum, established in 1964, exhibits and displays collection that introduces visitors to the ideals and philosophy of Marshall and other leaders. At the library you can access books, maps, collections pertaining to various wars and the documented material on George Marshall. It also undertakes educational and research programs regularly. Old Providence Stone Church was constructed in 1859, it has also served as a school, residence and a store during its existence. In 1972, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, but it no longer conducts prayer services.
The Blue Ridge Vineyard in Shenandoah Valley offers quality wines from grapes of its own vineyard. A 30 minute drive north from Roanoke, VA will take you to Buchanan. Located near Interstate Highway 81, this lovely, picturesque town is replete with historical buildings and an old-world charm.
