    »Silver Lake Reservoir

A manmade body of water and a site of a continuing wildlife preservation project, Silver Lake Reservoir has served joggers, walkers and dog owners for decades. A 2.15-mile path with a couple of ups and downs loops around the reservoir, consisting mostly of compacted dirt, highly suitable for running. A community center, a small basketball field and a specifically designated dog park flank the park on the south side so you can let your canine pals off the leash within the perimeter. A few folks, however, prefer to take their pups for a walk or a trot around the water. The idyllic aspect of the scene is somewhat lessened by the wire fence encircling the actual reservoir. Nevertheless, the place still gets a thumbs-up from many local jogging and fresh air enthusiasts as a pleasant site for a jog or a stroll. Parking along the reservoir remains ample throughout the day. -Jamie Zum

    »La Brea Tar Pits

Once upon a time, Rancho La Brea or La Brea Tar Pits was only a Mexican land grant. Now a park, the tar pits have been the world's richest deposit of Ice Age fossils. More than 40,000 years ago mammoths, saber-toothed cats and dire wolves freely roamed the Los Angeles basin and became entrapped in the natural asphalt of the tar pits. During the summer months, visitors can observe the ongoing excavation from Pit 91. A visit to the on-site Page Museum is a must. Check website for further details.
