    Prairie Dog Town

    MacKenzie Park Road
    Lubbock, TX 79401
Black-tailed prairie dogs are a keystone species crucial to ecosystems throughout the western United States, from Texas in the South to Wyoming up north. But nowhere do these herbivorous little critters rule the roost more supremely than down at Prairie Dog Town, a prairie dog sanctuary in the heart of Lubbock's venerable Mackenzie Park. Begun as a modest endeavor in the 1930s, Prairie Dog Town has seen its share of excitement over the years, what with the naming of Mayor Emeritus Kennedy Clapp, the installation of prairie dog Prairie Dog Pete as official Goodwill Ambassador, and, in 2004 and 2005, an epic renovation that resulted in perimeter fencing AND interpretive signage! Admission is free.
