»Tomioka Silk Mill

The Tomioka Silk Mill was instituted in 1872 and is the oldest silk spinning factory in Japan. The national government established it as part of the Japanese industrial revolution, to make the country globally competitive in silk reeling. The mill passed through the hands of various public and private owners and played a significant role in increasing both the quantity and quality of raw silk production. Though it stopped operations in 1987, today, the mill and surrounding structures are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both the building architecture and manufacturing methods were inspired by French designs and techniques and this mill boasted of numerous women employees at its apogee. Visitors can avail of informative guided, multimedia and group tours at this heritage site.
