During the general public's infatuation with ska music in the '90s, a string of bands from Southern California dominated the scene. Amongst them, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Firehose, Murphy's Law and Voodoo Glow Skulls. These bands all shared a similar sound and when the ska genre blew up, they were the apex of cool. Though the scene has all but faded, a few of the bands, including the Voodoo Glow Skulls, still carry on tour semi regularly.

Though the seminal Southern California ska-punk band Sublime stopped performing in 1996, with the death of its lead singer/songwriter Bradley Nowell, fans of the group's music can rest easy knowing that there're tribute groups like 40 Oz To Freedom that are intent on dutifully recreating the well-known songs that Sublime became known for. With members from San Diego, the trio is able to maintain the original band's characteristic California swagger and listeners have taken to 40 Oz To Freedom's sound so well that it was awarded the San Diego Music Award for best tribute band in 2010.
