Quite the anomaly, Matisyahu is an American Hasidic Jewish reggae musician. He first started making music in 2000 and achieved mainstream success with the release of "King Without a Crown," a single that would go on to receive attention in the U.S. top 40 charts. It might seem like a contradiction for a devout Jew to devote himself to reggae and hip-hop stylings, and though his rabbi likely doesn't approve, Matisyahu is able to pull it off and sound completely original doing it.

Sounding like a forgotten artist from the classic Americana soundtrack to O Brother, Where Art Thou?, San Francisco's the Brothers Comatose offers just enough of a lively spin to make it an excellent addition to the modern folk/country scene. The band's five members (only two of whom are actually brothers), mesh traditional, acoustic American roots music with an energetic spirit that draws comparisons to like-minded revivalists such as The Devil Makes Three. The band's instrumentation of banjo, guitar, stand-up bass and fiddle really comes to life in a live setting.
