»No Sleep, Brooklynvegan & City Lights Present: No Sleep Till CMJ II

    October 21, 2014 5:30 PM

Xerxes (also spelled Serse on ocasion) is a fairly serious Italian opera with comic quirks that's written by German-British composer George Frederic Handel. The opera is loosely based upon King Xerxes I of Persia and the tinge of romantic intrigue that is said to have surrounded his royal court. Although the opera failed commercially when it premiered in 1738, primarily due to the unorthodox mixing of elements from both the opera seria and opera buffa genres, Xerxes has gone on to become one of Handel's most important works, despite virtually disappearing from the stage altogether for almost 200 years. The opera's opening aria, "Ombra mai fu" (English translation: Never was a shade), has also gone on to become one of Handel's most popular pieces of music, known to most simply as Handel's "Largo."

The solo project of Natalie Mering, the former bassist of Jackie-O Motherfucker, Weyes Blood builds layers of haunting jangles, reverbed echoes and experimental noise, topped off with Mering's deep, cathartic vocals. The result of this layering is generally a lengthy, jangly drone-folk piece that clocks in around seven minutes and has its fair share of sonic meanderings. Though Mering conceived the Weyes Blood project back in 2006, it was only in 2010 after relocating to Baltimore and signing with the Not Not Fun imprint that she began receiving much deserved attention.

Formed by Cole Smith, the guitarist for indie rock band Beach Fossils, DIIV (pronounced: Dive) might not have the most distinguishable name, but it has quickly caught on with music blogs since its formation. The four-piece is based out of Brooklyn and signed to Animal Collective's Captured Tracks record label, producing hazy, dream pop with 1980s-style synth lines, new wave guitars and blurred, fuzzy vocals, helping the group fit well into the Brooklyn musical niche of 2011.

    »Thurston Moore

    October 21, 2014 8:00 PM

Best known as front man and co-founder of 1990s experimental noise icons Sonic Youth, Thurston Moore is also a solo artist and has kept busy with various projects in between the albums and tours of his primary band. Highly regarded for his avant-garde guitar work, involving atypical tunings, strange timbres and unusual methods of playing, Moore was credited in Rolling Stone magazine's "Greatest Guitarists of All Time" at number 34 and has had collaborated with many other respected guitarists and musicians, like Glenn Branca, Nels Cline and Christian Marclay. While much of Moore's early solo work fell in the category of experimental noise or improv, his 2011 album Demolished Thoughts showcased slightly more streamlined leanings toward acoustic Americana. Despite the album's less experimental quality, it was still hailed for Moore's evident talent and ability to produce a beautifully subdued release. Thurston Moore tours as a solo musician regularly and is often joined by special guests like Kurt Vile and J. Mascis.

Cold War kids is an indie rock group from Long Beach, California that was founded in 2004. Despite being labeled a “Christian band” by some critics, a damning title in rock and roll, the group has had a relatively large success with its characteristic sound that follows a classic recipe of rock infused blues with loud catchy guitar riffs and wailing vocals.
