    Holmdel Horn Antenna

    791 Holmdel Road
    Holmdel Township, NJ 07733
Holmdel Horn Antenna was built in 1959 for NASA's (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) passive satellite project - Project Echo. This huge microwave horn antenna was later used as a radio telescope for two radio astronomers, Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson in the 1960s. Created by Bell Telephone Laboratories, this horn antenna has played a key role in the world of physics. In 1965, the scientist duo heard a distinct yet mysterious static background noise from the antenna. They discovered it was a cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) that infiltrates the universe, leading it to being one of the most valued cosmology discoveries since Edwin Hubble's finding that the universe is expanding. It also gave base to the "Big Bang" theory of the universe's creation by earlier scientists. Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson won a Nobel prize in physics for their important contribution while Holmdel Horn Antenna became a National Historic Landmark.
