Eclectic Guitars: Eric Johnson & Mike Stern
Top HatFebruary 09, 2015 8:00 PM

Missoula, MT 59802
When Guitar Player magazine refers to you as "one of the most respected guitarists on the planet," you must be doing something right. Such is the case for Austin, Texas native, Eric Johnson; whose instrumental and fusion electric guitar style has won compliments from the likes of Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton. Johnson's biggest hit, 1990's "Cliffs of Dover," not only won a Grammy that year for "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" but it's also been immortalized in the video game world thanks to its inclusion in the third installment of the popular series Guitar Hero. Though Johnson is an accomplished pianist and vocalist, he's really known for his guitar playing. His style touches on smooth fusion jazz, classic rock shredding and a bit of country, which is no doubt a product of his upbringing. He conveys his virtuosic abilities not with a showy attitude, but with an accessible one--a big factor in his widespread acclaim and success.

Lettuce is a funk/jazz fusion collective based in New York City that was formed by a group of friends who met at Boston's Berklee College of Music during its summer music programs for high school students in the early 1990s. With each member of the collective coming from a background in rigorous music training, Lettuce prides itself on housing musicians that have the chops to pull off some of the smartest and funkiest jazz sets around. Boasting over a decade of experience impressing audiences with its members' tremendously energetic live shows, Lettuce's recent foray into recording shows the collective's excellent taste and sensitivity to musicianship in the studio as well.

Missoula, MT 59802
Formed in Boulder, CO in 1989, Leftover Salmon has remained one of the preeminent staples of the jam band scene for over two decades. The band has gone through some roster changes over the years but is usually comprised of six core members, often with additional musicians onstage during live performances. Like many acts in the jam band genre, Leftover Salmon employs elements of country, rock and bluegrass into its music, but is particularly notable for its regular inclusion of world influences, particularly those of Cajun music and zydeco. The result is a lively and highly-skilled blend of banjo picking, guitars, fiddle, drums, mandolin and keyboards. Leftover Salmon went on hiatus for a couple of years in 2005, but has since remained active on the festival circuit.
