»Signature Series: The Other Three B's

March 29, 2015 3:00 PM

Initially a new solo venture for ambient composer Cale Parks, BRAHMS suddenly became a full-fledged band after landing an opening slot for a sold out Passion Pit show, just one month after the project had come into existence. With only a few weeks to write and practice enough songs to fill a set, and with a name that references one of the great classical composers of the Romantic period, BRAHMS found itself in a precarious position. However, the Brooklyn-based group prevailed and won over the audience with a livetronica style that hearkens back to the eras of 1970s synthpop and 1980s new wave. Since then, the trio has continued to tour across the US, opening for other prominent indie bands, and has released a few hit 7" singles.

»Zz Top

April 02, 2015 7:30 PM

The Texas-based blues rock outfit ZZ Top rose to prominence in the early 1970s with its dirty brand of southern rock and wailing guitar solos. After releasing its 1971 debut album, fittingly titled ZZ Top's First Album, the band established its raw, earthy sound and attitude with fuzzy guitars and rollicking rhythms. Each of the band's subsequent releases throughout the decade earned critical acclaim and a fair amount of radio play, proving that the three-piece band's Texas drawls and dirty jokes resonated with fans outside of the Lone Star State. ZZ Top continues to release its bluesy southern rock music and remains one of the most easily identifiable acts around with two of its three members sporting bushy, chest-length beards.

»Mason Jennings

April 10, 2015 7:00 PM

Mason Jennings is an American singer/songwriter known to mix simple, effective songwriting with modern folk arrangements. By the age of 19, he'd bounced around the country, from Hawaii to Pennsylvania and Minnesota, all the while honing his acoustic guitar playing and knack for penning memorable melodies. His 1997 self-titled debut was full of a combination of fun, stripped-down rock songs and sparse, sensitive ballads, all bolstered by his unique and drawn-out vocal delivery. As his prominence has notched up over the years, Jennings has tweaked his style a touch by incorporating more involved production flourishes and trying his hand at political songwriting, but his simple effectiveness still lies at the core of his entire catalog.
