»Solstafir With Ancient Vvisdom and Vit

April 28, 2015 8:00 PM

The first thing to understand about Austin, Texas-based Ancient VVisdom, is that the group spells its name with two V's instead of a single W. The second is that they sound like what would happen if the darkest of 1990s grunge acts suddenly became a minimalist folk band. With nothing more than a couple of softly strummed acoustic guitars, whispered vocals and a bit of barely-there percussion, Ancient VVisdom implies the driving force and angrily dark intensity of a band backed by walls of massively distorted guitar amps.

»The Maine

April 28, 2015 6:00 PM

Tempe, Arizona pop band The Maine formed in 2007 while the members were still in high school. Quickly launching a major label career after two short EPs, The Maine released its July 2010 album Black & White on Warner Bros. The Maine's lyrics speak to their hometown of Tempe and various personal experiences growing up there. More autobiographical than most pop rock bands, The Maine frequently sings about relationships, most of them fraught with tension and disappointment. Alternative Press Magazine's 2010 reader's poll named The Maine its favorite band of 2010.

»Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo

April 28, 2015 8:00 PM

Pat Benatar owned the 80s with her pop-rock ballads that seemed to be playing on every radio station and in the background of every movie. While the 80s may be far behind us, Benatar is not. She can still belt out the hits that made her a household name and the songs are still a blast to hear live. Grab your favorite pair of leg warmers and head on out to a show.

»Education Speakers Series - School Closures and Student Achievement

April 28, 2015 8:00 AM

What happens to students when their school closes? Are they worse off--or do they make academic gains after closure? And what about policymakers: Should they take a firmer stance on closing chronically low-performing schools, or should they, rarely, if ever, shut down a school? Join us in Columbus on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 for the release of Fordham's newest study, School Closures and Student Achievement. This research study brings to bear empirical evidence about the impact of closures on student achievement in Ohio, using state records from nearly 200 district and charter schools that closed between 2006 and 2012. The event will feature Dr. Stephane Lavertu of the Ohio State University and Dr. Deven Carlson of the University of Oklahoma, who will present the findings of their groundbreaking school-closures research. A panel discussion will follow the presentation. The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 8:00 am and a light breakfast will be served.  Event begins promptly at 8:30 am. Space is limited, so RSVP today.

»Sister Act (Touring)

April 28, 2015 7:30 PM

Adapted for the stage from the 1992 hit film, Sister Act follows the story of a lounge singer who, after an unlikely turn of events, finds herself in a convent among a group of nuns. When Deloris witnesses a violent crime at the hands of her mobster boyfriend, she enters the witness protection program and is placed in last location any of her old cohorts would find her: a convent. Forced to adhere to the somber and sober life of the church, Deloris clashes with the convent's leader, Mother Superior, but eventually finds her niche with the choir. Through Deloris' leadership, the group of singers is transformed into a soulful gospel choir. The church's attendance and donations skyrocket, attracting the public's attention and subsequently, old problems come to the surface again. Sister Act has been captivating audiences since its 2009 West End premiere with its poignant story line, gripping characters and electric music.
