This bright, colorful, energetic festival is held every year from October 7th to October 9th in honor of the patron god of Nagasaki. The three-day festival, considered one of Nagasaki's "Big Three," is held at the city's most prestigious shrine, Suwa Jinja. If you follow the 277 steps toward the shrine, halfway up there is a plaza where festival participants dance while carrying a long paper dragon reminiscent of Chinese festivals. On the final morning of the festival, the people will begin chanting, "Motte Koi!"--which means "encore.

This is Nagasaki's newest, biggest and best multi-screen movie-theater complex. It is also perhaps the most convenient, as it is located in Amu Plaza, the huge shopping complex built around Nagasaki Station. The multiple screens show most of the Hollywood blockbusters, as well as a few Japanese films. Like all other Japanese movie theaters, ticket prices are high, though there are discounts for students. Seats may also be reserved in advance for an additional fee.

»Nagasaki Public Auditorium

Nagasaki City Public Hall is one of the more popular entertainment venues in the city. That is due in part to the attractive building, the excellent facilities, and the good acoustics. It frequently hosts concerts, ballets, traditional dancing, and other artistic events. Although considered large by Nagasaki standards, it has a 1,746-person capacity, making it actually rather small and intimate.

»Nagasaki Takarazuka Gekijo

With its 532-person capacity, this theater, built in the days before mega-complexes came to Japan, was probably once considered a huge venue. Today, it still draws crowds, if not for the popular films it runs, then at least because of everyone's nostalgic affection for the place. Located three minutes from the Shianbashi entertainment district, it is a great place to see a movie before an evening out.Note that there is a yearly membership card here, which entitles you to movies for only JPY1,000. Other discounts off the usual JPY1,800 rate are also available.
