»Joshua Bell, Violin

March 04, 2015 7:30 PM

Taking to music at a young age, Bloomington, Indian-born artist Joshua Bell began his musical journey at age 4, when he acquired his first violin. After years of formal training and playing under renowned conductors such as Charles Dutoit, he began writing his own original compositions and eventually branched out into folk and jazz. Through his impressive catalog of work, which includes notable cadenzas for the violin concertos of classical legends like Beethoven, Mozart and Mendelssohn, Bell has earned a reputation for not only his technical skill, but also his emotional presence on stage.

»Metropolitan Opera: Carmen

March 04, 2015 7:30 PM

This French-language opera by Georges Bizet broke with the traditional division between serious and comic operas, introducing a realistic approach to the subject matter. The title character, Carmen, is a boisterous and sensual gypsy girl, who catches the eye of a corporal, Don Jose, in the cigarette factory where she works. They fall in love and she seduces him to abandon his life in the military to come dwell with her and other smugglers in a hideaway in the mountains. Their love suffers, fading under the strain of hiding, and when Don Jose discovers that his mother is ill, he leaves, promising Carmen that they will meet again. In the final act, Carmen has a new lover, a victorious bullfighter, and Jose returns to win her love. But she is unmovable, proclaiming that she will live her life with the freedom she craves. Jose cannot bear it and kills her in front of the crowd. This tragicomic ode to love and its wild, charismatic heroine have won its place in the hearts and imaginations of opera-goers and artists since its premiere in 1875, and will continue as it is performed around the world for generations to come.

»Asleep At The Wheel

March 04, 2015 7:30 PM

A Texas household name since 1969, Asleep at the Wheel has garnered 9 Grammys and has had 20 singles on the Billboard charts since its inception. After forming in West Virginia, the band was immediately asked to open for Alice Cooper, which grabbed the attention of Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen, who invited the country swing act to collaborate with them in East Oakland. Less than a year later, after releasing a debut album that Van Morrison raved about in Rolling Stone Magazine, Willie Nelson convinced the band to relocate to Austin, TX and Asleep at the Wheel has remained there ever since. Though the group has gone through multiple members during its 50 year run and might not have quite as much fame now as it did in its early days, Asleep at the Wheel continues to produce music, collaborate with WIllie Nelson and even write and produce a play to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of Bob Wills' birth.
