Standing over 580 feet tall (177 meters), The Manhattan Municipal Building is one of the largest government buildings in the world. This 40-story building is home 13 municipal agencies and used to be the site of over 18,000 marriages every year. The gorgeous Beaux-art and Renaissance-style building was constructed between 1909-1914 in order to accommodate the growing demand for government offices after the five burroughs of the city were consolidated in 1898. Today, The Manhattan Municipal Buildings is one of the most well-recognized landmarks and a major tourist attraction for visitors and architecture buffs. The inside of the building is just as impressive with archways inspired by the Romans and Guastavino ceiling tiles on the south arcade.
